| Kayakers planning next adventure
Two Australian kayakers are already looking ahead after making a record-breaking crossing of the Tasman Sea to land in New Plymouth yesterday. Twenty-five-year-old James Castrission and Justin Jones, 24, paddled more than 3,000 kilometres over 62 days and arrived to a massive welcome on Ngamotu Beach. The pair will sign autographs in New Plymouth today, but already have ideas for their next adventure. Although they will not reveal what the challenge might be, they predict their parents will not be happy with what they have planned. The men underwent precautionary medical checks yesterday and came out clear. Justin's father Rod Jones says it is fantastic to see the pair safe as it has been worrying seeing them battle severe see conditions at sea.

Across the Las Vegas Strip, the digital-services manager is watching his future competition work the dirt. His iconic casino and getaway was built for $12 million in 1962 by the inventor of the dice and card game Yahtzee. Soon, it will be facing off against CityCenter, a $7 billion hotel, casino, mall and condo development spearheaded by MGM Mirage, the town's second biggest resort operator. Already, 10,000 cubic yards of concrete have been poured and framing of the first 12 floors of its 4,000-room gaming resort is under way. Sparks's job is to figure out how Planet Hollywood can use technology to help it compete effectively for affluent customers against stiff, newer and flashier rivals. So far, he's made sure visitors have ubiquitous and reliable wireless Internet access.

General Electric, in addition to manufacturing the 3.6 MW turbines slated for the Cape Wind project, has embarked on a multi-year research effort to design a 7 MW far offshore unit. The U.S. Department of Energy has signed a $27 million contract with GE for this development. The advanced wind system concepts will include innovative foundations, construction techniques, rotor designs and electrical components designed for use in the ocean’s harsh environment [7]. So the question remains. How far in the future will these research and development projects become realistically competitive with shallow water projects? History is replete with promising technologies that have taken decades to commercialize. For example the evolution of the transistor to large scale integrated circuits of today has taken 50 years.

Campaign tinkering
Looking ahead to the next round of primaries, Hillary Clinton warned voters that she would come to their states and start tearing up if polls there showed they were not supporting her candidacy. Rudy Giuliani defended his decision not to campaign in the early primaries, saying they were mostly beauty contests that measured little more than candidates' likability. "Later on, once people are ready to vote for someone unlikable, I feel confident they'll choose me," he said. Huckabee supporters rejected feelers from the Romney campaign to switch their support, saying they "weren't born yesterday." However, they did concede they were created just 6,000 years ago. And in Massachusetts, residents said that Obama's inspirational message of nonpartisanship and "yes we can" reminded them of Governor Deval Patrick's own "together we can" campaign in 2006, and they looked forward to the day when Obama is president and every state in the country would have destination casinos.
