| Premiers cite job losses to pressure PM
They get the same as everyone else even though they don't need it. Wonder what Harper's plan would be if the West suffered another draught and crop failures. Do ALL provinces and territories get monies then? Posted 11/01/08 at 2:18 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives Microsoft offers to buy FAST for $1.2 billion; Likely to trigger enterprise search consolidation Posted in: General IT Management Google Microsoft Search Enterprise 2.0 Microsoft said Tuesday that it will offer $1.2 billion in cash for Fast Search and Transfer (FAST), a big player in the enterprise search market. The move is sure to shake up the enterprise search market, which thus far has been dominated by a series of smaller players like FAST, Autonomy and Vivisimo. Google has made some inroads, but for the most part the market is the realm of niche players. Microsoft is about to change that with FAST. You can expect Google to make a purchase in enterprise search along with traditional enterprise players like HP, IBM and the usual suspects.
Indulging A Taste For Diners
A few miles away at the edge of the airport and across the road from Wal-Mart is the Aero Diner, a lovingly restored rectangular structure from the late 1950s with a gleaming steel skin and large picture windows that angle outward. Once known as East Hartford's Boulevard Diner, it was moved to Southbury and then to Windham, where it was the South Windham Diner until 1995, arriving at its current site in 2005. Unfortunately, not all diners are so successfully recycled: Skee's, which dates from the 1920s, has sat sadly vacant and deteriorating for years on its busy Main Street corner in Torrington. Garbin speculates that it's "the oldest viable diner in the country." I remember a Fathers' Day breakfast in the tiny barrel-roof eatery when my kids were small. How I long to be there again, gazing out the etched glass windows, admiring the dark woodwork, the marble countertop and elaborate ceramic tile as I fork pancakes off my plate.
'Draw-down has more to do with Afghanistan - not Iraq'
And experts warned it could go even higher next year, with plans for a new offensive that could involve up to 1,400 Scottish troops. The Black Watch battalion is tipped to move back to its Inverness barracks as it is no longer required in Northern Ireland and military sources say the troops are available for Afghan operations. The Highlanders are also expected to be sent to Afghanistan, having undergone the appropriate training in Canada. A former MoD official said it was disingenuous for Mr Brown to make a statement on Iraq and not Afghanistan. Steve Haines, now a professor of military strategy at Royal Holloway, University of London, said: "You can't talk about one without talking about the other. Playing around with 500 or so is not going to make a difference in either operation. "The draw-down has more to do with the need to strengthen infantry in Afghanistan.
Intel Washes Hands of OLPC Project
Intel has resigned from its seat on the OLPC project's board of directors. The two groups were perhaps an unusual pair, given that they make competing products: the XO laptop from OLPC and the Classmate from Intel, both designed to sell to schoolchildren in developing countries. Currently, XOs run on AMD chips. When the two got together this summer, Intel was expected to deliver chips to the second generation of XOs.
