Somerfield's ecommerce drive goes rotten

UK supermarket chain, Somerfield, has pulled the plug on its struggling Web-based home shopping service 24-7.

John von Spreckelson, the company's chief executive, said the venture hadn't been growing. "It represents a significant distraction to management at a time when its focus has to be on the core Somerfield and Kwik Save business," he said.

The group reported a ten per cent slump in sales last month. The service will stop taking orders from next week and will cease trading on 25 June.

In a statement Somerfield said the 11m assets will be absorbed into the main organisation.

Small Businesses who want enterprise software such as CRM (Customer Relationship Management), Project Management, and eLearning have typically been ignored by the software industry. Change is coming, however, and it may be the software makers themselves who end up feeling left out. With abundant and cheap computing power and new feature-rich Open Source Business applications, small businesses can now bypass commercial software altogether. With Managed Application Service providers filling the technological gap, small businesses can digitize key parts of their operations without making large investments in consultants, hardware, or software licensing. 2005-01-05

General Electric, in addition to manufacturing the 3.6 MW turbines slated for the Cape Wind project, has embarked on a multi-year research effort to design a 7 MW far offshore unit. The U.S. Department of Energy has signed a $27 million contract with GE for this development. The advanced wind system concepts will include innovative foundations, construction techniques, rotor designs and electrical components designed for use in the ocean’s harsh environment [7].

So the question remains. How far in the future will these research and development projects become realistically competitive with shallow water projects? History is replete with promising technologies that have taken decades to commercialize. For example the evolution of the transistor to large scale integrated circuits of today has taken 50 years.

Women ignored by gadget makers and sellers - still

Gadget retailers and manufacturers are missing out on 600m a year because they fail to connect with the female market.

One in three female internet users polled by advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi said they would increase their spending on consumer electronics if retailers thought harder about how they approach them and offered more guidance in stores and on ecommerce sites.

Almost one in three of the 750 female internet users surveyed do not consider technology advertising relevant to them and the majority of women feel disillusioned that brand owners and retailers dont understand what they care about and dont view them as a relevant group of customers.

One third of women do not feel confident enough to ask questions in stores with one respondent describing electronics retailers as reeking of a "strong scent of man".

The Mecca of Pheasant Hunting

We all feel the excitement when we harvest a large buck or land the lunker fish; but limiting out after only four hours of hunting and then accomplishing this as a team of guys gathering so far from home, was really special.

While I would like to say the rest of the hunt went as well; it would be virtually impossible to duplicate the success of our first day. The rest of the hunt was fruitful, just typical SD hunting consisting of lots of walking and systematic harvesting of pheasants. With all things being equal, harvesting wild pheasants in Americas heart land has to be one of best adventures you can undertake.

While the majority of hunters are middle aged white collared professionals, two of the hunters were unique.
