When Table opened at Ballantyne Village about two years ago, executive chef Gene Briggs already had a menu featuring such items as sweet onion and bacon chowder, a wild striped bass dish, and flourless chocolate truffle cake. "If you call us two or three days ahead of time, we can bake cheesecakes," said Briggs, who is familiar with gluten-free needs because of a relative with celiac disease. That's not to say there's no need for improvements, followers of the diet say. Some point out it would be easier if grocers had separate sections of gluten-free items, rather than scattering them all over the store. And while a 2006 federal law on labeling requires manufacturers to state whether wheat or gluten is included in products, there's no federal standard on what gluten-free means.
Man of the Year
While they bravely claim they won't provide any more money before Christmas, Democratic leaders are signaling compromise. Even John Murtha is eating crow and outlining a possible deal: Democratic Representative John Murtha said he is "optimistic'' that House Democrats and President George W. Bush can agree on Iraq war funding after an earlier $50 billion proposal linked to troop withdrawals was blocked in the Senate. "Congress wants to come up with an agreement,'' Murtha, chairman of a House subcommittee on military spending, told reporters in a video conference from his office in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. "Leadership may be willing to compromise'' on the time line for withdrawing troops from Iraq, he said... Murtha said that because of the number of troops in Iraq and the amount of support equipment in the country, a full withdrawal could take as long as two years.

Gore Wins the Norwegian Primary
Having now won the Norwegian Primary, it is reasonable to ask why Al Gore would want to slog his way through the snows of New Hampshire. But the inconvenient truth is that never has the man who might yet be president needed to more seriously consider his personal legacy — not to mention the small matter of his potential to make the world anew — than now. There is, after all, the matter of the open space at the end of what is now the most remarkable resume of anyone seeking — or considering seeking — the presidency. Let's review. This is how Al Gore's resumé reads as of this morning: Son of a great senator. Harvard graduate, with honors. Vietnam veteran. Award-winning investigative journalist.
