The case of the dubious diamond dildo.

Maybe pompous L.A.Times media critic Tim Rutten had a point about those "gossip sheets, whether online or on slick paper, that continue to proliferate like informational vermin." The Pulitzer-winning Times would never . ... Hello? What? Really? The bogus Becks vibrator story didn't appear in Luke Ford's blog at all? It appeared ...well, here. ... P.S.: And it hasn't been corrected. ... [via Steve Smith] 1:15 A.M.

According to L.A. Observed, Mayor Villaraigosa appears to have drawn a line around Mirthala Salinas and put his credibility, if not his career, on it:

At today's photo op du jour, he flatly denied that there have been any other women in his recent past — "a definitive, absolute no."

The mayor's language is echoed in this local ABC TV report.

Samsung's quarterly profit falls 6.6 percent; stock rises despite raid ...

The Suwon, South Korea-based company manufactures both DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, chips used in personal computers, as well as NAND chips used in digital cameras, music players and mobile phones.

Prices for both products have fallen sharply over the past year.

"For DRAM, demand was strong but pricing was weak because of oversupply, essentially," Chu Woo-sik, executive vice president for investor relations, told analysts on a conference call after the earnings were released.

Lee Min-hee, an analyst at Dongbu Securities Co. in Seoul, said industrywide average selling prices for DRAM chips have skidded about 85 percent over the past year amid a supply glut after manufacturers were too optimistic about personal computer demand in 2007.

He added, however, that Samsung escaped the worst of that because it has diversified into specialty DRAM chips such as mobile DRAM and graphic DRAM.

Gannett Appoints New CDO

You might imagine that more than a couple of companies have tossed the title of Chief Digital Officer at some random young guy. Gannett Co. seems to have thought things through, however, and it's given the position to Chris Saridakis, the CEO of PointRoll.

No corporate poaching took place in this transfer; PointRoll, a media solutions business, is owned by Gannett. This closeness should, in addition to avoiding bad feelings, lend Saridakis an instant familiarity with the company's operations.

Craig Dubow, the chairman, president, and CEO of Gannett, certainly seems to have confidence in his new CDO. "He will use his talent and ability to move rapidly in further developing Gannett into a digital powerhouse," Dubow said in a statement.

But aside from word of a couple of other personnel shifts, that's all the news out of Gannett today; there were no hints as to what Saridakis will do with his title, in other words.

Retractions From David Horowitz

But as hearings ended in Philadelphia Tuesday, critics of the Academic Bill of Rights were saying that they had scored key points. David Horowitz, the conservative activist who has led the push for the hearings in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, admitted that he had no evidence to back up two of the stories he has told multiple times to back up his charges that political bias is rampant in higher education.

In an interview after the hearing, Horowitz said that his acknowledgements were inconsequential, and he complained about "nit picking" by his critics. But while Horowitz was declaring the hearings "a great victory" for his cause, he lost some powerful stories. For example, Horowitz has said several times that a biology professor at Pennsylvania State University used a class session just before the 2004 election to show the Michael Moore documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, but he acknowledged Tuesday that he didn’t have any proof that this took place.

Your Comments : Interim PM tells world leaders at the UN, Why he did ...

Hey, you got it: big changes lie ahead. The 1998 constitution was finagled by a corrupt and flawed process. Was the constitution ever put to the people of Fiji for their consideration? No. Was the constitution ever translated into Fijian and Hindi? No. The 1998 constitution was in fact foisted on the people of Fiji by four people: Rabuka, Jai Ram Reddy, Tom Vakatora and Brij Lal. The time has come to change it and I think that Interim PM Bainimarama may well have found a way to do it.

As long as Fijian land rights are not tinkered with and the status of Fijian s as primus inter pares is maintained, I am for structural changes to the constitution.

There are several ways to get Fijians to share the land that they own and that they are not using and that might be used for the good of the country: one of those ways is for non-Fijians to learn how to ask, kerekere vakaturaga.
