Is Siebel's great news great for Oracle?
Well, well, well, look who remembered how to sell software! Siebel Systems, soon to be part of the Oracle land-grab, pre-announced a stellar fourth quarter today, with revenues up 20% from last year. That means one of three things: Oracle got an even better deal than anyone thought, now that Siebel's fate is assured customers are more willing to buy—especially at lower support costs than Oracle may charge, or Siebel salespeople are uncertain about their fates and selling like mad. The worst of all three for Oracle is the last one, and it's also the most likely. Let's say that's 100% of what's going on. Not great for Oracle, but not all bad either, at least in the long term. Yes, it means Oracle will have to rebuild its sales pipeline for a few quarters, just as it had to with PeopleSoft.
Chancellor launches supercomputer
Hector (High-End Computing Terascale Resources) is one of the largest and most advanced computers in Europe. It is capable of 63 million calculations a second - the equivalent of around 12,000 desktop systems. Four times faster than its predecessor, the £113 million service is expected to play a key role in keeping scientists at the forefront of their fields of research. At the launch, Mr Darling said that the computer was a "major milestone" for British science. Speaking at the University of Edinburgh's Advanced Computing Facility, he added: "As a country our future will depend upon our ability to encourage the brightest and the best into this area because it will pay dividends for us all." "We've got a world-wide reputation for excellence in scientific research and having a computer that is this powerful will mean that research which could have taken years will be brought forward much more quickly." Professor Arthur Trew, professor at Edinburgh University and director of Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC), said that the lifespan of such a machine was quite short.

Editor's Mailbag: The Iowa Caucuses
As mayor of New York City he turned welfare offices into job centers which made 151,376 placements in the 2001 fiscal year. He did all this while making tax cuts. He managed to cut taxes 23 times, relieving the tax burden by more than $9 billion; he was able to do this with a legislative body that was dominated by Democrats (90 percent of City Councilors were Democrats). No other candidate hired more than 8,000 new teachers. No other candidate was Time magazine’s Person of the Year. Only five states had larger budgets than New York City and only 11 states have larger populations. Giuliani has proven to us that he is capable of leading, and he is the only silver bullet to keep the Clintons out of the White House for another eight years.Make the right choice on Jan. 3. Advice From Top Marketing Consultants
Is your best material on your Web site, and is it well organized and written for the scanning reader? Can visitors create presentation-ready materials right on your Web site, and can lawyers quickly assemble pitch materials to e-mail or print? Is your most relevant experience easily found? "Showing your lawyers in the best light? Print the bios of your lawyers and your closest competitors and then compare the printed copies side by side. Who stands out? Who looks superior? Web site analytics programs show that visitors to law firm Web sites view lawyer biographies three to four times more than any other pages on the Web site. Visitors are searching for, finding and validating referrals to lawyers. The bios must be current, relevant and written with your most important experience right up front." Systemax saves CompUSA from knacker's yard
Systemax is buying the CompUSA brand name, its ecommerce operations and up to 16 stores in the great CompUSA close-out sale. The big US computer reseller hails CompUSA as a "strong complementary" business to its own retail TigerDirect brand and is paying up to $30m for its new baby, depending on how many stores it actually buys. CompUSA went titsup last month, selling itself to Gordon Brothers for an undisclosed sum. Gordon, a Boston-based restructuring specialist, said it would it close CompUSA's 103 retail stores in an orderly wind-down and run the electronics retailer's ecommerce site until a buyer was found. .
DETERMINED: Gordon Brown at the Downing Street press conference ...
Mr Brown declared 2008 would be an "important year for the Union" but did not elaborate. He stressed: "It's important to remember that two-thirds of the people of Scotland voted in the last elections for the Scottish Parliament for parties that oppose separation; for parties that support the maintenance of the Union." Ms Alexander, Labour's leader at Holyrood, marked a political watershed in her party's thinking on extending home rule when in November she said: "There is a desire in Scotland to walk taller rather than to walk out. Part of walking taller is that we should take more financial responsibility for our own affairs in Scotland. We should not let housekeeping bills get in the way of breaking the marriage but the housekeeping bills deserve to be looked at again." She has set a cross-party commission involving the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats at Holyrood and Westminster on the future of devolution but it is known that some Scottish Labour MPs are deeply unhappy about it and believe Ms Alexander is "dancing to the Nationalist tune".
