Netflix expands Internet viewing option

Although Apple hasn't confirmed anything yet, Chief Executive Steve Jobs is expected to make it official during a presentation Tuesday in San Francisco.

Netflix is gearing up for the increased competition by expanding a year-old feature that streams movies over the Internet instead of making customers wait for their online rental requests to be delivered through the mail.

Until now, Netflix restricted how long its more than 7 million subscribers could use the streaming service each month, based on how much they pay to rent DVDs.

For instance, under a popular plan that charges $16.99 per month to rent up to three DVDs at a time, Netflix customers could watch as many as 17 hours of entertainment each month on the streaming service, dubbed "Watch Instantly."

With Monday's change, virtually all Netflix subscribers will be able to stream as many movies and TV shows as they want from a library containing more than 6,000 titles.

Fisk wants to sell its security to 'pay the rent'

The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, referenced in the article, "Setting limits on free speech," Nov. 4, uses this right like an umbrella of protection as they parade around the country protesting military funerals.

It has been said that they have a constitutional right to do so. I'm glad to see that a jury in the U.S. District Court in Baltimore saw it differently.

Everyone has the right to express their views on the ongoing war against terrorism, but in my opinion, to protest at a funeral is about as low as it gets.

The disrespectful and derogatory signs held up by Westboro Church members have no place in sight of a grieving family. It's a disgusting spectacle to say the least.

Matthew Dolan, of The Baltimore Sun, used the adjectives "family-based, conservative and controversial" in his description of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Inside "Dell Hell"

I have now almost completely removed all semblances of Windows from my system, (running either SUSE or Ubuntu, with occasional forays onto my Win2K drive for data) and am much happier for it.

Next time, I'll buy HP- at least they support Linux and offer AMD based laptops. I bought a Dell because I wanted to be able to travel to Austin for support- I'll never buy from them directly again.

A look at Microsoft's new business division leader

But those who have worked for him say Elop, 44, is a no-nonsense, hardworking sales executive who helped take Flash maker Macromedia Inc. to new heights during the dot-com boom and, as short-term CEO during the subsequent downturn, helped the company survive by engineering its acquisition by rival Adobe Systems Inc.

"His nickname was 'The General,' " said Chris Swenson, a software analyst at NPD Group Inc., who was an employee at Macromedia during Elop's tenure.

With his military-style flat-top haircut, Elop stuck out among the "young, green-haired and pierced employees" at the San Francisco company, Swenson said. "He's the kind of guy who probably gets heavy starch on his dress shirts."

Even so, employees seemed to respect him. "He seems very, very bright and down to earth," he said.

Vista SP1 beta brings changes to search function

Defragment your hard drive) now lets you choose which volumes to defragment.

In addition, if you use BitLocker for encryption, you can also choose which drives to encrypt.

SP1 aims at performance and stability improvements, including faster browsing of network shares. On my test machine, though, the beta unaccountably won't allow me to browse to another Vista PC on my network. I can browse XP machines with no problem, but not my other Vista PC. Odder still is that I can make a remote desktop connection to take over my other Vista PC using remote control, but I can't browse the PC using Windows Explorer or the Network Map.

On my test machine, installation of SP1 went smoothly, if slowly; it took about an hour and fifteen minutes on my 1.83GHz Core Duo laptop. The machine rebooted several times, and did so automatically, requiring no intervention after installation began.
