Area unemployment rate improves this year in SCC

Although the county unemployment rate lags behind much of the state, the figure has risen since the same time last year. The improvement is not limited to Santa Cruz County. The rest of the state and the Southwest in general are also enjoying relative economic prosperity."It's a good time to be an employee or to find work," said Don Wehbey, a research administration senior economist at the Arizona Department of Economic Security.Arizona's Workforce, a recent report from Wehbey's department, details the unemployment picture throughout the state. The jobless rate in Santa Cruz County sat at 7.6 percent in January, down from 9.1 percent at the same time in 2006. Of the 16,475 available workers in the county, 1,250 were unemployed, the report says. The county jobless rate ranks ahead of only Apache (10.9 percent) and Najavo (8.1 percent) Counties.

Government's taste high, buries country in debt

Finance minister Dr Omar Davies in his 2006 budget speech clearly stated that government would increase the threshold below which Jamaicans would not have to pay income tax by 42 per cent to $275,000 with effect from January 1 this year.

This means government would have to give up a large amount of money at the same time. I wondered then how this was possible when the government was running a high fiscal deficit of more than $38 billion. The fiscal deficit is the difference between what government earns as revenue and grants and what it spends. Government is therefore spending far more than it earns so it has to borrow billions to close the gap, pushing up the total public debt to nearly $1 trillion which Jamaicans will never be able to pay off. At the same time, what is alarming is that the debt is running 130 per cent of what the country produces in goods and services or what in economic terms is known as the Gross Domestic Product.

Allegany County in time of transition, says economic development chief

CUMBERLAND - Allegany County is in a time of transition, Economic Development Director Matt Diaz told Cumberland Rotarians at their weekly meeting held at the Holiday Inn. Since he has been working with the county, Diaz has seen a shift from a mainly industrial economy to a more diversified economy."Industrial development is still a big part of what we do," Diaz said. While industries are a large part of the economy, other types of operations, such as technology-based businesses, are becoming more visible in the area.Diaz is especially pleased with the progress occurring at Allegany Business Center at Frostburg State University. During his presentation, Diaz told the Rotarians about his department's responsibilities and highlighted some businesses.Hunter Douglas, Western Maryland Health System and ACS were among major employers mentioned by Diaz."ACS is growing in leaps and bounds," said Diaz.

Russia begins to protect its national interests

MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti) - From a speech by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the 15th meeting of the Russian Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, held on March 17, 2007.

Global developments, Russian diplomatic moves of the past few years, and the speeches made by President Vladimir Putin on foreign policy issues, notably in Munich, clearly demonstrate that the Russian political leadership has a well thought-out and tested foreign policy strategy.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union seemingly made Russia a candidate for another territorial and political re-division, a situation it had faced in the early 18th century, when the problem was solved through an accelerated modernization of the country. This time, we are fighting the challenge with radical political and economic reforms.

Claiborne County Hopes Second Reactor Means Economic Boom

The first nuclear reactor at Grand Gulf began producing electricity in 1985. Back then, residents had to be convinced the energy source was safe. Now, after running safely just outside of Port Gibson for over 20 years, the possibility of a second reactor is greeted with a wait and see approach.

Right now, Entergy has received a site suitability permit. That means the piece of land they've chosen can support the nuclear reactor. But they're not saying if or when they might begin building. Claiborne County residents hope they make up their mind soon.

Downtown Port Gibson isn't much different than any other in a small Mississippi town...a courthouse sits on the square and shops line the street. One difference though is this nuclear power plant sits just eight miles away.
